Weekend Preview - March 11-13, 2011

Three new movies hit wide release tomorrow - I'm excited for one of them.  I can't imagine any of these movies doing well enough to garner enough box office to break Hollywood's slump, but miracles happen...right?

Battle: Los Angeles (Rated PG-13) - A marine platoon battles alien invaders in this movie that appears to be what would be the result if War of the Worlds and the Transformers had a love child together.  From the minute I first saw this film previewed, I have not felt one iota of excitement about seeing it.  I hope there's a chocolaty fulfilling center under the candy shell, but I'm expecting nothing but air.

Mars Needs Moms (Rated PG) - LA isn't the only place we have to worry about aliens, because in this animated feature, they're going after our moms.  Filmed using motion capture (which I hate) but based on a cute story by Berkeley Breathed (that I love), I have mixed feelings about this one.  I'm hoping it's better than the previews, which I have not found to be all that impressive.

Red Riding Hood (Rated PG-13) - A young girl is torn between the man she loves and the man her parents have arranged for her to marry.  The situation is further complicated when a werewolf starts to attack and a famous werewolf hunter is brought to town.  This one has been high on my anticipation factor for awhile, but I do have concerns.  Catherine Hardwicke is directing; she made the brilliant 13 and the atrocious Twilight film.  I'm hoping this goes the way of a more traditional horror film and not the path that leads to Twilight.  It stars Amanda Seyfried who I loved on Veronica Mars but have been fairly underwhelmed with her movies so far.  This is the film I'm most looking forward to seeing this weekend, though.

I had really been looking forward to seeing the new Jane Eyre adaptation.  I even reread the book.  I was disappointed to find out it was opening in limited release in only four theaters nationwide.  It doesn't look like it's scheduled to open in Iowa any time in the near future.

Oscar nominated Biutiful opens this weekend at the Fleur Cinema in Des Moines.  I really want to see this one, but I won't have time to make it to Des Moines this weekend.

Expect this weekend to be a battle of the Fanboys vs the Twihards.  Depending on which audience turns out, either Battle: Los Angeles or Red Riding Hood will be the number one movie this weekend.  I'm expecting it to be Red Riding Hood.  Mars Needs Mom will most likely open soft; I don't see it opening as strong as Rango did last week, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Rango make more than Mars Needs Moms this week.

I'm working a lot of overtime this weekend, so I will get review posted as soon as I can!
