Wayback Wednesday: Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

Okay, so this movie isn't that far back, but it does feature the most awesome, Neil Patrick Harris.  Since NPH's is celebrating his birthday this week, we're honoring him with a weeks worth of columns covering NPH.

After an evening spent getting stoned, Harold and Kumar see a commercial for White Castle.  Deciding this is the only way to curb their munchies, they set out on a journey for burgers.  Along the way, they have run-ins with the law, a crazy raccoon, and a hitchhiker high on Ecstasy played by NPH playing himself.

The movie is hilarious and hits so many funny situations, including confronting racial stereotypes as Harold is a hard-working Asian who constantly gets work piled on him by his coworkers, and Kumar is Indian and from a family of doctors.  Much of his journey is his attempt to avoid that stereotype, only to realize that it may be what he really wants to do.

Neil Patrick Harris's cameo is literally one of the funniest scenes in any comedy in the last several years.  I think that without Harold and Kumar, you don't get a Superbad or some of the other Judd Apatow films.

While the movie was not a huge box office success, it relaunched NPH's movie and television career and became a cult hit after being released on DVD.   It also spawned a 2008 sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay which follows our unlikely pair as they try to get to Amsterdam.  NPH returns in that film too.  The trio will also be seen in a second sequel due out November 2011:  A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.

That's right...Santa's bringing doobies for all the good little boys and girls!
