Three new films open this weekend in wide release. While I'm sure Hollywood is hoping for an up weekend (it would be the first of the year, and the first since November of last year), I'm not sure if the three movies are up to the task. It is a stronger slate of movies than last year when Diary of A Wimpy Kid, The Bounty Hunter, and Repo Men opened up, but Alice in Wonderland was still the number one movie of the weekend. I don't think Battle: Los Angeles will have that kind of carry over. That being said, this is probably the best shot they have had at getting a winning weekend so far this year.
Leading the crowd into theaters is Paul. Starring Simon Pegg & Nick Frost (Sean of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), Kristin Wiig, Jason Bateman, and the voice of Seth Rogan, this movie probably has the biggest chance of beign the number one movie his weekend. Two tourists hitting the alien hotspots in the American Southwest get more than they bargained for when they have a real alien encounter. I think it looks really funny based on the previews; I just hope it's not one of those films where all of the funniest bits are in the trailer. Paul is Rated R.
Limitless is the most intriguing film to me this weekend. Bradly Cooper (The Hangover) plays a writer who is given a drug that unlocks the brain's potential. I love the concept behind the movie, so I'm hoping they do it justice on screen. Robert DeNiro is in this, too, and I'm looking forward to seeing him in something that doesn't revolve around "Focker" jokes.
The other wide release is The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey as a high-profile lawyer is the back of his car (a Lincoln). This one looks like an intense drama, and it has a really strong cast - Marisa Tomei, Ryan Philippe, William H. Macy - I like McConaughey, and he's way overdue for a hit, so I hope this one has a good weekend. It's based on a book by Michael Connelly which I haven't read yet. I've got it on my Nook app on my phone, and I'm hoping to get to it before I see the movie this weekend.
In other theaters around the area, The Fleur Cinema is opening Tiny Furniture, an independent film about a recent college graduate who moves home to figure out what to do with her life. The movie was nominated for several awards at the Spirit Awards, including the director being nominated for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.
The Carmike Wynnsong in Johnston is also showing The Lord of the Dance in 3D if you need to get an Irish fix for St. Patrick's Day.
So is anyone planning on hitting the theaters this weekend? What films are you most excited to see?
