Box Office - May 23, 2011

So, I was only off by about $50 million on my guess of what Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would bring in this weekend.  I definitely overestimated Pirates appeal here in the State.  However world-wide, the movie is a huge success.  It set the box office record for biggest opening weekend world wide.

Here at home, On Stranger Tides was popular but not near as popular as the last two films in the series.  The movie failed to break the $100 million mark which was on the lowest end of estimates I had heard.  Instead, the movie brought $90 million here in the U.S., a respectable enough number to give it the number one weekend for the year so far, but not near the $135 million the second film brought in during its opening weekend (with lower ticket prices and lacking the added boost of 3D prices).  Combine that with the foreign box office, and the latest installment brought in over $364 million to become the biggest opener beating Harry Potter VI, the previous leader.

Bridesmaids held up well in it's second week, claiming another $20 million plus to its total.  This represents only about a 20% drop from its first week totals, which is very good for a film in its second week.

Thor continued to fall in its third week, bringing in $15.5 million.  It was, however, enough to move it past Rio to become the second highest grossing movie of the year hear in the U.S.  Although, in comparison to Pirates, Thor's worldwide box office is only about $28 million over the first weekend of Pirates of the Caribbean.

#4 - Fast Five
#5 - Priest
#6 - Rio
#7 - Jumping the Broom
#8 - Something Borrowed
#9 - Water for Elephants
#10 - Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family.

Soul Surfer dropped out of the top ten after an impressive six weeks for the small budget film.

Overall for the weekend, total box office saw a slight increase over the same weekend last year when Shrek Forever After opened.

Next week gives us The Hangover II and Kung Fu Panda 2.  Both films are highly anticipated and should lead to big numbers next weekend, especially since it's a holiday weekend.
