While looking for a pirate themed horror movie, I happened upon this as one of the rare entries. It's not really a pirate horror movie so much as a horror movie that takes place on the set of a movie being filmed about pirates...but it was the closest I could find.
I had fairly high hopes for Dark Reel, even though it was a B movie because it stars Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (T2), and Tony Todd (Candyman). That, however, did not help this crapfest. While I wasn't expecting much from the story, the concept wasn't bad.
Movie buff, Adam (Furlong) wins a walk-on role in Pirate Wench, the latest film from his scream queen idol, Cassie May (Tiffany Shepis). Unfortunately, bodies begin to turn up as cast and crew start to get slaughtered, and he's the prime suspect.
The acting in this movie is absolutely terrible. Henriksen, Furlong, and Todd all seem like their not really even there, particularly Henriksen who would have to step up to terrible. While none of these guys is a Denzel or Tom Hanks, they usually put up decent performances. They are extremely disappointing and completely unbelievable in Dark Reel.
The one bright spot is Tiffany Shepis who was surprisingly good. From the looks for her extensive movies roles, it appears she is something of a B movie scream queen in reality. I'd like to see what she could accomplish in a more mainstream role.
Dark Reel isn't great cinema, and it's not even so bad it's good. The one thing I can take from the movie is checking out more Tiffany Shepis roles.
