In the last of our pirate themed movies, this week we'll travel back to 1941 with a Bob Hope classic, The Princess and the Pirate.
Princess Margaret (Virginia Mayo) is fleeing a marriage arranged by her father to marry the commoner who is the love of her life. Her ship is attacked by a band of pirates led by "The Hook" (who want to hold her for ransom. Also on board the ship is a traveling entertainer who does disguises known as Sylvester the Great (Hope). When the pirates come aboard, he (dressed as a gypsy) and the princess are taken captive. They later escape with the help of one the ship's crew (Walter Brennan) who gives them a map to a buried treasure.
What follows is a madcap adventure as Sylvester and the princess must outwit The Hook and a corrupt governor who are working together. There is also a hilarious cameo by Bing Crosby. The movie breaks the fourth wall on several occasions. Hope addresses the audience at the very beginning of the movie, and again at the end. He also references the Road movies in dialogue.
If you're looking for a classic comedy, you can never go wrong with a Bob Hope movie. The man had incredible comic timing and stands in a class all by himself. The Princess and the Pirate is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
